Songwriting is not something that you necessarily get better at the more you do it

Feat. Rostam Batmanglij Created/Produced by Kareem Rahma (@kareem) and Andrew Kuo (@akuoproject)

Summary

Rostam Batmanglij argues that songwriting doesn't necessarily improve with practice since complexity doesn't equal emotional impact. The host pushes back, bringing up Picasso's quote about learning to paint like a child. Rostam concedes he did get better for a while, but insists the path isn't linear. It's chaotic. The host ends with confidence: "The best is yet to come.

So, what's your take? Songwriting is not something that you necessarily get better at the more you do it.

100% disagree. Maybe there's no authority on songwriting, but I think as a songwriter, you can go, "Oh, that song was better than my first song."

The reason I say necessarily is cuz between 14 and 20, like if you're writing songs in your bedroom, maybe then you get better. Things can change in your life. You could have more to say, your style can change, but I don't know that you get better. There's some things where practice makes perfect and you can get better and better and there's a linear path. But I think with songwriting, it's kind of a different game because the more complex you get, it doesn't necessarily make the song more moving. It doesn't reach more people. It doesn't mean more.

I think complicated doesn't necessarily mean better. Like a song, a song can get better by becoming simpler. I'm going to give an example not from music but from art. Picasso.

He simplified.

Well, he said that it took him four years to learn to paint like Raphael, but then it took him his whole life to learn how to paint like a child. [laughter]

That's right. Sometimes it's hard to do the thing that looks easy.

I think the thing about songwriting is the songs that we love tend to be the ones that are direct and simple.

How long have you been making music?

Probably since I was 14.

Have you gotten better?

I think I did get better for a period and then I stopped. I think what I'm saying is the path is is not linear, you know, like you're you're going up and down. Like you have periods where things are amazing, you catch waves, then you have periods where maybe you're not so inspired, you have less to say. I think everybody has those things. And I think what I'm saying about songwriting is kind of like it's a little bit chaotic and you got to keep doing it.

You embrace the chaos.

Yes. You got to embrace the chaos and you got to keep doing cuz you don't know when you're going to write your best songs in your career.

I know when. The best is yet to come. That's what I always say, player.
