We have the climate solutions we need, we just need to f*cking implement them

Summary

A guest argues we already have all the climate solutions but aren't implementing them because fossil fuel interests and doom narratives get in the way. The conversation covers electrifying transport, protecting ecosystems (which could solve 20 to 30% of problems), and making implementation sexy. Best moment: "Stop trying to be a DJ" when discussing how we need more electricians and tradespeople to actually build our clean energy future.

So, what's your take? We have the climate solutions we need. We just need to implement them.

I don't know. But I—I would hopefully 100% agree. I would love to say 100% agree, but I don't know if we do. We know how to electrify transportation. We know how to do clean energy. We know how to green buildings. We know how to improve agriculture. We know how to protect and restore ecosystems, but we're just not doing it because the apocalypse has better PR.

The apocalypse also is more financially lucrative. Solar and wind is actually more profitable.

Then why are we converting to them? Because we have all these fossil fuel executives and climate denying politicians in their pockets pushing us in the wrong way. So I feel like we need to just get these folks out of the way and we need the internet and Hollywood to help us see visions of climate futures worth having so we all roll up our sleeves and like want to be part of the solutions.

Did you point at me when you said Hollywood?

Hey. Hey, let's go. No, I agree. It seems like there are a lot of problems that we have solutions to and then we've decided to go we'll get around to it. Obviously, there's room for like more innovation, new technology, but we could just do all the other stuff now and we have cleaner air, cleaner water, clean energy. Like the upside is enormous even in the near term. It's not like we have to wait for benefits for future generations.

I think the big one that you were talking about like preserving ecosystems. Yeah? That seems easy. There's a lot of land. We should just leave it. Just stop cutting down forests.

And that would solve a lot of the problems. That would solve a significant amount of the problems. I think it's like 20 to 30% is just all of these protecting and restoring ecosystems.

That sounds easy. We don't even have to do anything. Wetlands, coral reefs, just like love them.

So we don't have to do anything except for just not— There's actually a big part of the climate solution that's like we all just need to chill. Just like back off, do less. Just enjoy life on Earth together.

We should stop going to Mars. We're going to have to get ourselves together.

How much does it cost to get to space? That's so much gas. Fuel. Since we have the climate solutions we need and the challenge is just implementation, I think we need to embrace implementation as the sexiest word in the English language. Like bring back the trades. We need like a million more electricians to do the clean energy transition. We need plumbers. We need builders. This is like literally building the future we're going to live in together. Like that's hot. Be a problem solver. Swipe right on electricians.

Stop trying to be a DJ.
